Has anyone seen the video Just a Horse on barnmice.com? I am in it! People in my barn put it together and we are sending it all over the world as a message that everyone who loves horses will understand. We were really nervous to go in front of a camera, but we all chose the part that meant the most to us. I am including a link and hope that many people will enjoy it and send it to their horsey friends.

NAIS is NOT Voluntary

http://www.newswithviews.com/Hannes/doreen5.htm

By Doreen Hannes
January 20, 2008
NewsWithViews.com

I want to tell you how I found out about NAIS (National Animal Identification System) in the hope that you will see how disturbing this is and why we have to fight it with everything we have. In July of 2005, I went to a meeting at the Ava Missouri Sale Barn regarding a new electronic cattle identification program that was to be mandatory in January of 2006 in order to sell cattle in the State of Missouri. Yes, January of 2006. Dr Taylor Woods, a member of the NAIS Subcommittee, was the one speaking. He never said what the name of the program was, nor offered any website where one could go for information. I asked a couple of questions and then made a statement. That statement was, "It sounds like you just want to have complete control of the food supply." Dr Woods replied, "We already do." It is a frightening prospect to consider any group of men in complete control of the food supply, much less a bunch of people who fear microbes. Needless to say, much of what Dr Woods stated was not entirely true. We would not be required to electronically identify our cattle to be able to sell them in January of 2006, and it wasn't really a done deal except in the minds of bureaucrats who hate the fact that we still have this irritating thing called the United States Constitution that needs to at least be given lip service from time to time or chance a full scale revolt.

Then, in late November of 2005 I went into a local feed store, MFA, and was greeted by a flame orange sign on the counter saying "Due to the Bioterrorism Act We must have your name, address and phone number to sell you feed." As creepy as that is, I now had a starting place. In a short amount of time I found myself with the name of the program Dr Woods was talking about, which was indeed the National Animal Identification System, and a whole lot of information on the Bioterrorism Act of 2002, which is basically NAIS for food and feed up to the final consumer. Incidentally, the Bioterrorism Act passed as part of the 2002 Farm Bill, which included the Animal Health Protection Act (the USDA claims AHPA as their authorizing legislation for NAIS) introduced by none other than current Ag Chair Senator Harkin of Iowa. This same man has now introduced the first probable statutory reference to NAIS in the 2007 Farm Bill. Is this a coincidence? Not likely.

The USDA recently released new documents that will make NAIS next to impossible to fight without going on the offensive and filing suit against the Federal government. The USDA states in their Business Plan that in a scant few weeks (February 2008) they will issue a proposed rule to roll all breed registry identification into NAIS. They will also issue rules to roll all disease control programs into NAIS compliant identification standards. Brucellosis, Tuberculosis, Coggin's and Pseudorabies will magically roll right in through the rulemaking process. NPIP for poultry will just roll on in. Scrapies for sheep and goats will simply be turned in to NAIS premise ID without the knowledge or even consent of participants in this program. Certificates of health to move animals across state lines, or even within the state will be rolled in as well. If you get the idea that NAIS is like a bulldozer on steroids, you'd be about right. Remember that NAIS is a three part program with it's foundation being premise identification. You must have a premise id to get an animal id, and you must have premise id and animal id to have animal tracking.

The USDA is busily making Cooperative Agreements with all states and tribes and any non profit organization that will stick it's hand out for the taxpayer money to encourage and probably require their members to enroll in premise id and animal id in order to reap the benefits of membership in those organizations. The states are to help make NAIS compulsory in order to engage in commerce under these contracts. There is an exception allowed for individual animal identification… If you never move an animal off your property other than directly to slaughter it will not require an NAIS animal id, but there is no exception mentioned or alluded to for premise id under USDA's plan.

Meanwhile, our federal level legislators blithely reiterate to us "NAIS is voluntary at the Federal level" and say that they are doing so well because they cut the budget for NAIS. Well, the infrastructure has already been laid, folks. Unless you specifically stop NAIS via statute or a moratorium, it's going to roll over all of our rights through all disease control programs! Why do you refuse to uphold your oath of office? You didn't take an oath to pervert "general welfare" for the benefit of corporations and bureaucrats, did you? Did our forefathers bleed and die so that an agency could require birth certificates on chickens?

Many people seem to have a very difficult time understanding that NAIS is and always has been 48-hour traceback on all livestock. If you want 48-hour traceback, you must have 24 hour reporting of movements. NAIS is not a marketing program; it is being brought to bear at the point of market. NAIS cannot, by very definition, be a voluntary program. The USDA is holding states hostage at the point of interstate commerce by attaching NAIS premise id, and animal id to health certificates and disease control programs. To up the ante even further, they are buying the participation of feedlots, breed organizations, farm groups, youth groups and processors. To move across state lines, or in many cases, even within that state, you will need to be in NAIS. How can that be voluntary?

NAIS opposition has been fairly effective fighting this on a state by state level in a disorganized and haphazard fashion. The original plans called for mandatory in January of 2008 and mandatory with enforcement of all aspects in January of 2009. We've pushed the USDA back, and sideways, but we have not stopped them because the people in positions of power have not had the will to take on the fight.

The anti-NAIS movement has had a grand total of one case filed; and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture backed off just because of the filing. Why are all the attorneys who have stepped into this battle against NAIS not going after the federal government for an injunction or more? The entire program is patently and assuredly un-Constitutional. The USDA is trying to shift all lawsuits to the states by saying "NAIS is voluntary at the federal level" while they push the states into full implementation through perverting the Interstate Commerce Clause.

Certainly, if we still have a Constitution, we can win on simply the religious objection alone. But our arguments go further than even the First amendment. We also have the 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 13th and 14th amendments that are being violated with NAIS. There are issues of unfair competition that will need to be addressed, as well as real estate effects of this program. Why can't we get on the offensive and file suit? We have harm in many of those who were rolled in, or coerced into the program, and they are not all Amish who won't file suits.

We have the Alliance Defense Fund who won the case without even going to court in PA, and the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund, who have taken on Greg Niewendorp's case in Michigan, the Center for Law and Religious Freedom involved in Wisconsin where the Amish have been assigned PIN's without their consent; they have all broken their teeth on NAIS. We have several individual attorneys who are well researched on the subject, and still, no filing on the federal level to stop the USDA from shoving this down our throats. The states of Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin already have mandatory NAIS to a large degree. With the myriad of roll ins (Massachusetts, Idaho, Colorado Fairs, Illinois fairs, North Carolina Fairs and hay, Tennesse hay share, NY calfhood vaccination, Pennsylvania any farm programs, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, etc.) without proper authorization, there is no doubt where this is going. And it doesn't take a degree to see it.

While I readily concede that suing the USDA is not something to be done on a whim, surely if some of these learned individuals could get together and keep their egos out of the way we could find someone with the proper experience and expertise to bring suit against the USDA and get it stopped before we have to fight every single rule they promulgate related to NAIS for every one of the species covered under the program.

This is a plea from one who knows without a doubt that if this program is not stopped that there will be bloodshed….and not just the blood of animals. I am fully committed to doing everything within my power to stop this before it comes to that point. Please, please, stop playing politics and start filing before we have a complete disaster on our hands.

And to the unwashed masses, people like me that is, we cannot and must not fail to call our representatives on a regular basis and let them know we expect them to uphold the Constitution and the principles of freedom we have been endowed with. When we get a federal suit filed, we will need to reach into our wallets and support the one bringing the suit. When we get meaningful legislation to stop this, we must rally support for those pushing for us. It is going to take every one of us in whatever capacity we have to get this thing stopped. Don't wait for someone else to do it, or it won't get done. Your freedom is your responsibility. We have a gigantic secret weapon… there are way more of "us" than "them," and we're right!

WIND GALLS

I was after some information on Wind Galls, as I've never had to deal with a horse with them before.
I am looking at purchasing a 6yo gelding that suffers from this affliction.
I believe it is not a major problem with the right treatment - it just does not look real good when the legs swell up. As it is caused by an excess of synovial fluid which is also a factor in arthritis I wondered if Wind Gall could eventually lead to arthritis and permanent lameness.
This young horse will end up at the sales and possibly the knackery as his owners are not interested in spending any money on him. I would like to take him on and eventually sell him as a Pony Club horse. Any information would be appreciated. Cheers

Overcoming fear in a sporting horse

The fist thing you'll need is alot of patients! It takes alot to get a horse over a fear and most of it is just time. He'll need to be exposed to it on a daily bases and learn (on his own terms) that it's not always a bad thing!

Now is it the pole with a flag? or is it poles and flags seperate?? I'll go on like it's a pole with a flag...Do you have a small pen you can work him in, like a round pen or something that's smaller then a usual riding ring? That way he can't get away from you as easily. I usually work from the ground first that keeps me safer, aka not likely to fall off a frightend horse, I can let go of a lead faster then I can get off their backs!! What you'll want to do is find his cumfort zone with the pole, to see how close he'll go, unless you already have an idea. I would put the pole outside of the pen first, sometimes having the fence as a barrier puts a little ease in their minds. Oh and be sure to bring him in the pen first before the flag pole get's set up. If he see's it's there chances are he probably won't want to go in the pen. When you put the pole up, make sure you do it opposite of where you are standing with him to give him as much distance from it as possable. If he's quiet rub his neck and encourage him with your voice and tell him how good he's being. Next I would see how close you can get him to walk up to it. Again praising him for every step closer to the pole he gets. When he get's to the point that he won't go any closer just stand there with him untill he realizes the pole's not moving and he relaxes. Watch for the ears to flip back, him lower his head or even takes a deep breath and lets it out. I would take that as a finnishing point on day one or two, and praise him for being a good boy! He has to re-accociate the flag pole with something good!! When your done remove the flag pole first then give him a couple min. to relax before you take him out. You don't want him to be affraid and run out of the gate, and that way he won't think that he's in there just for the flag pole! The first day or two if you can you may want to let him loose in the pen, that way you can be kept out of danger in case he reacts badly. Then, again, once he relaxes go ahead and take the flag pole away. He'll learn eventually that when he's calm and relaxed it goes away, and after a while it won't be a problem for him..

The ultimate goal would be to get him to walk up to it and sniff it. Once he does continue with that step for a couple days, untill he's not botherd by it again he either takes a deep breath, drops his head or even just doesn't show any intrest in it anymore. After he will touch it on his own then I would start touching him with it. I usually start with the shoulder, they can turn their head to see what your doing, and the item. It's also a spot that he has a hard time running away from it forward or backwords. He can go sideways but it's harder for him to get away from you at least. Take your time and just go slow. Once you touch him rub him with it on his shoulder. Once he's ok with that call it quits for that day. continue doing that for a coupld days untill you can rub him all over with it and he doesn't mind! Keep in mind this is when he'll learn to "trust" it again. When you rub him with it, it will plant a new thought in his head that it's not so bad after all, and that it's not there to beat him. A good thing to do is pick an easy goal for each day you work with him. Say the fist day you want to just introduce him to the flag pole. Him in the pen the flag pole out. A good goal for that day could be for him to just be ok with it. Lets say that next he can tolerate it in the pen and you know he'll only go towards it about 10 steps. The next goal would be just getting him to take one step closer to it! If he doesn't or won't keep with the 10 steps for a coupld days then try for that 11th step! When it comes to a fear like that every step closer he takes is another goal passed!! After he's ok being touched by them and could really care less introduce a secone one. Let him sniff it.. If he's ok with two then by hand walk him through the pattern.. With every pole he's ok add another one, again walking the pattern just in hand! When he's proven he has no problem with it at all with a just a few poles then take him over to the bigger ring. Use two poles let him sniff them then walk the pattern in hand. If he's ok with that and doesn't have a problem with it then I would go ahead and then get on his back and do it. Let him sniff the poles again first once you get on his back just so that you know he's ok before you try the pattern. Walk it first, if he's ok then try trotting it, and so on! Don't be in a hurry and if you get stuck somewere just take your time, and use the next couple days to accomplish getting past that one thing.

If it's a flag basicly fallow the same steps untill you can rub him with the flag, and he's not bothered by it!

About 10min. or so a day should be enough to accomplish the little goals you set for him. You don't really have to do it every day if you don't want to though if you don't want to! Also give him something positive to do afterwords. Either a nice grooming or something you know he enjoys even if it's a bite of an apple!

As far as making poles... My dad made a coupld for me when I was younger. He just took a piece of 1 or 1.5 inch PVC pipe maybe 8ft long. A large coffie can and a bag of cement. Put the pole centered in the coffie can, then fill with the cement! I don't remember how he held the pole in place when the cement was setting though.

Ok so I'm a little slow posting this I just haven't gotten a chance to get on here yet. Anywho, so I had the great oppritunity to take a clinic this weekend with an awesome guy.. Can you guess who?? I'll give ya a hint he was a dual silver medialist in the 1988 olympics.... Do u know who it is yet? Ok ok I'll tell ya, Greg Best.. yup that's right Greg Best the man that rode my horse idol when I was a kid Gem Twist!

I was able to ride both friday night, wich was an hour private lesson. And a group lesson sunday morning. I felt so good, tired but good, after I got home sunday afternoon. It's been so long since I have had a lesson like that, and it was the best thing that I have done/gotten in the past few years. I took Bear and he was super, started out a little rough but I haven't been able to get that much out him till friday. It was cute I think Mr. Best liked Bear too because on sunday he would come over and hold his head up for him.. I finnaly got some recogonition and complimets that I have been in need of for a long while as well! I did get some pics so I'll see if I can't get them posted!.. But anywho if anyone ever gets the oppritunity I will reccomend that ya go and ride with him even if it is just once!

Anywho I just had a really good weekend and wanted to share, and again sorry it took me so long! I hope every one is doing good and the ponies are all well!!

Anyone near Long Island - or within a decent distance?

See if you can't get a hold of a local papper. There might be adds in there for horse boarding that's a little more local. Also check and see if you can't find if there is a state equine council. In DE we have the Delaware Equine Council (?sp) and they list most of the places in DE that have horse related business. Check out the tack shops too. A few places I know of useually have a board or in Dover Saddlery's case a little shelf with lots of advertisments for horses for sale, places for sale, and boarding farms. Carousel Park in upper DE used to board horses but I don't know if they do anymore, I'd think that would be way too far though. There are lots of places in Jersey, and I'm pretty sure NY has a few too. Oh yeah pick up.. or actually u can find it online The Horse of Delaware Vally... http://www.horsedelval.com/ ... They sometimes have listings in NJ and NY. Mostly in PA but once in a while you can find things from other places too!

Anywho I hope you can find something up there! P.S. Mia looks great!!! And I think it's cute how you both have the same look in that one picture!!!

Huge update on my boys!

I haven't been around lately been busy between working and going up to the barn and not had much time inbetween.

Firlst off after much back and forth debate I finnaly decided to sell harley. Well more like I finnaly got a intrestead buyer! So she came out looked at him and liked him. Monday he got his vet check and cleared with just a few findings on his x-rays.. They were digital ones and so we got to see instant "results"... THey were just super minor things and they were not discouraged by it so next saturday the the 30th he will be living in Maryland with his new mom! :( They got on really well so I'm pretty confident that he's going to a really good home!

Halligan will soon be going off to michigan for some serriouse training. The trainer he's going to used to be in DE but has to go back up there to rebuild his familys lake house. So Erin may be horseless for a little while. The barn owner where I have the boys at does have a couple horses so I'll still be able to ride. One of them is a real nice guy, and is also for sale..so if we hit it off I may see if I can't make an offer on him! Anywho I'm sure I'll get some pix eventually. But that's pretty much it for now, I hope everyone else is doin ok!

Books for sale Some horse related.

Horse books, Cook Books, Fiction and non-fiction. A little bit of everything. Please drop by and take a look.

I have a list of books for sale on half.com

I'm using them instead of e-bay because I can keep them up longer if they don't sell. If you don't like the books on there at the moment, check back because I'm looking through the house and adding more all the time.
